About Us

Paw in Hand Pet Services began in 2000, though it was a lifetime in the making.

Welcome! My name is Maren, I am the visionary behind Paw in Hand. (AKA Business Owner. Trainer. Walker. Dog owner. Mother. The one who signs all emails “Arrooooo, woof!” and whose cell phone ringtone is a dog barking (on cue, naturally) It isn't just my business, it's my passion.

I’ve always loved animals and have enjoyed sharing my life with a menagerie of pets. Dogs though, have always held the biggest place in my heart!

After more than two decades of experience and studies, my toolbox of training techniques and understanding of canine behaviour is extensive. I have an array of tools that I choose from that help dogs and people learn what they need to make their relationship work in real life day to day situations. There can be a unique approach to each situation; your dog is different from your neighbour’s, your training methods will be too. I will never resort to harsh methods, intimidation or pain.

I am committed to a professional code of ethics and dog friendly, positive training methods that create a basis for success; whether on the trails or in your home, the methods used and taught are committed to the health, well being, safety and loving development of your canine friend.

Many people and courses have helped me learn different and diverse methods that I incorporate into my own unique and upbeat style. Take a look at my credentials if you want to know who has inspired and taught me.

Currently I share my life with Opal, a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla; Trixie, a terrier X pocket dog; Caramel and Zephyr, the feline twosome; various rodent, feathered and finned creatures…and a very understanding husband and two daughters. They aren’t always as understanding but they’re both teenagers now. I have lived in Squamish since 1982. I live and love the outdoor lifestyle and can be found hiking, biking, running and exploring in beautiful Sea to Sky Country, usually accompanied by at least one dog!

Over the last 25 years I’ve trained and competed in various activities with my dogs including Agility, Obedience, Rally-O, flyball and I have been a SuperDog team member at the PNE. In 1989 I formed the Sea to Sky Canine Sports Club, led agility classes for a number of years and continue to participate in community demonstrations.

Employment as an Animal Control Assistant, a grooming assistant and as a practical nurse rounds out my official experience, while years of hiking and working with dogs fills the many different aspects that a dog service professional encounters.

Raising my own family broadened my understanding of challenges that families may experience. It made me aware and search for easier dog training solutions. People in today’s busy society are often challenged in meeting their dogs’ needs, but still love having a dog in their lives. Behaviour problems can easily develop. Overcoming problems in my own dogs reinforced my belief that positive training really does work!
